Seismic
We use deep seismic to define intracratonic fault systems in the Appalachian Plateau. For example:
By compiling interval thickness charts across the faults, we can
determine both the timing and sense-of-motion of growth faulting. By
combining seismic with the other subdiscipline, we can map the occurence
of faults even in hevaily vegetated regions, such as the Appalchian
Plateau. We have found that the
plateau in NYS is severely chopped by faults--both high angle and low
angle faults. As discussed in the structure section, some of the faults
in the NYS Appalachian Plateau have been active since Precambrian times.
Others, such as the Alleghanian thrusts
(both ramps and flats) were develped only during the Alleghanian Orogeny.
