Sloan Professional Master's Degree

Welcome to the website for the Alfred P. Sloan Professional Science Master's Degree in Geological Sciences: Environmental Information Analysis. This new and exciting graduate program is designed to integrate professional skills with traditional geological knowledge in order to put the master's degree student on a fast track in the environmental world. The program includes courses in management, computational math, case-studies, and professional methodologies, as well as an internship with an environmental company. We are offering two geological tracks: environmental earth science and natural hazards evaluation.

IS THE SLOAN PROFESSIONAL SCIENCE DEGREE RIGHT FOR YOU?

There are at least four strong reasons for considering the Sloan Professional Science Master’s Degree Program in the Geological Sciences at UB

Ř     The program is top-notch. The program integrates geology courses and professional courses that will give you the added edge for rapid

advancement in the environmental consulting world.

Ř     The tuition at UB is the least costly of any major public university located in the northeast and mid-eastern seaboard states.

Ř     The internship is with major international consulting firms.  When you graduate and are applying for jobs, you will already have first-hand professional experience in the environmental consulting world.  This intern experience provides a distinct advantage to you over other job applicants who do not such experience.

Ř     No thesis is necessary for the MA, which means that you do not run the risk of spending more time here than you planned because of slow progress in the thesis work (a common attribute of theses around the USA)

Ř     You may qualify for the Arthur A. Schomburg Fellowship Program, which provides a stipend of $7,500 plus tuition scholarship for a maximum of two years.

INFORMATION ON OUR CITY

BUFFALO,  NEW YORK

One final note: some of you have no doubt heard of the poor, but undeserved, reputation of the City of Buffalo, but be advised: this city and the region are a great area to live and study. Twenty minutes to the north is Niagara Falls, the oldest state park in the United States.  Two hours to the south are wilderness areas in the largest National Forest in the Northeast, and also the largest state park in New York State (Allegany S.P.). One hour south is the "Aspen of the East" (not our words--but Ski magazine's) with great restaurants, bars and snow (such a snow belt––over 200 inches a year). Two hours to the east are the Finger Lakes with gorgeous vineyards spilling down the slopes to the lakes. And Buffalo: world-class art museums, symphony, hundreds of restaurants and bars with blues and jazz, and legitimate theatre––more theatre than any other city between NYC and Chicago. Overall, the low cost of living combined with all these attractions make this a wonderful place to live for two years while you study with us.
