In this lesson you will practice with some basic HTML commands. Of course there are many softwares that are available for helping you build, organize, and publish webs. Those softwares aren't very useful, however, unless you have at least a rudimentary understanding of HTML. In this class, you will build a simple web page using a text editor, so that you see how HTML works. You will be left to your own resources to build more advanced web pages.
Introduction to the HTML Lessons
The general process will be to interatively create html, and then open it in a browser. I'll ask you to use Netscape in the Unix environment for this purpose, to make documentation simpler. You could use other browser to do the same thing, of course.
We will be working with an HTML tutorial published by the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI). They have prepare a series of interactive lessons, that coincidentally involve building a web page concerning Volcanoes. Click below to see what the final web page will look like:
You will need to work though lessons 1 through 14, but can skip the "Independent Practice" sections. If you consider yourself an advanced user of HTML, you may work through the advanced lessons 15-29, instead. You will be graded on your final product, and on a short handwritten quiz to test whether you learned some basics about Web Servers and HTML.
