Homework Problem

A. Construct an Excel worksheet to determine the density of a rock given the mineral content (i.e. the volume % of each mineral). In the lab there are six samples of hand specimens and rock chips. There are representative of samples from the mantle, the oceanic crust, and the continental crust.
 

B. Please estimate the relative abundance of minerals in each rock, that is the mode of the rock. Then calculate the density of each rock using your spreadsheet constructed above.
 

C. Finally, measure the density of each rock using the Jolly balances in the lab. You can work with a partner with the Jolly balance.
 

D. Discuss the difference between your calculated density and your measured density. Which rocks are representative of the three layers of the earth suggested above? Which rocks do not seem to represent any of the three layer of the earth in terms of density?
