Homework Problem
Metamorphic Reactions
A. Write the balanced equations for the reactions listed below:
1. The formation of diopside in a siliceous dolomite.
2. The formation of diopside in the presence of Tremolite, calcite and
quartz.
3. The reaction of chlorite plus k-feldspar to form biotite plus muscovite
plus quartz.
4. The reaction of iron-rich chlorite to form almandine in the presence
of quartz. Use the formula (Fe,Mg)4.5 Al3 Si2.5
(OH)8 for chlorite. This takes into account
the paired substitution of AlAl for MgSi in the chlorite formula.
The 3 Al atoms are evenly split in the +2 and the +3 sites in hornblende.
5. The formation of staurolite and chlorite in the presence of muscovite
and quartz to form kyanite plus biotite.
B. Give an estimate of the temperature for each of the above reactions
assuming a medium P/T gradient and/or a high P/T gradient.
C. Will all reactions occur under conditions of both geothermal
gradients? Explain,
