Lesson: Introduction to ENVI

About the lesson:

ENVI is a program designed to display, georectify, and process remotely sense data. It is a very powerful and flexible piece of software, but we will only touch upon some of its capabilities. In this course, we will not cover image processing or analysis. We will, however, take advantage of the georeferencing capabilities of ENVI and use it to understand false-infrared images that are so commonly used in GIS. Hopefully, these lessons will also make you aware of some of the capabilities of ENVI in case you should need it in your research.

The lesson you will work today is simply the introductory lesson that comes with the software.

Get the Data:

The data needed for the lesson can be found in the class directory:

/nsm/class/gly560/class/envidata

For today's lesson you will work with data found in the directory can_tm as indicated in the lesson.

Organize Your Workspace:

Create a subdirectory in your class directory called intro_envi. You will not need to copy the data files into this workspace but will need to save some data during the course of the exercise.

Start ENVI:

From a console or terminal window type:

use envi

This should bring up ENVI Version 3.5.

Start the Tutorial:

Open the ENVI Tutorial Chapter 1 in Adobe Acrobat.

What to Turn In:

  1. In the course of the tutorial you will create an annotated Landsat Thematic scene near Canon City, Colorado. Print this final map from ENVI directly to the printer.
  2. Output the final image to a .jpg file, and bring it into Microsoft word. Give the page a title (Landsat TM Scene Near Canon City, Colorado) as text in word, and then print the word page. Turn this in also.
