SedCore
Lake coring field trip, Baffin Island, May 2007 Students show off a sediment core that we collected at a lake near Clyde River

Teaching and advising

One of my favorite parts of my job is to teach and advise students on their research. I enjoy interacting with students and watching them discover and grow as scientists. Being a reflective teacher is important to me: I can always improve and make my message more interesting and accessible to students. Finally, teaching helps me become a better scientist and researcher.

Courses I have taught:
Climate Change (GLY 102)
Introduction to Geochemistry (GLY 308)
Surface Processes and Hydrology (GLY 312)
Quaternary Dating and Paleoclimate (GLY 453/553)
Forensic Stable Isotopes (GLY 417/517)

Why conduct outreach?

People around the world are affected by climate change, from Baffin Island, where the disappearance of sea ice is profoundly influencing the native hunting culture, to Buffalo, NY, where we may soon experience the hot, humid summers typical of Virginia and where lake effect snowstorms will be profoundly altered by decreases in lake ice.   My outreach efforts throughout the northeastern US and in Clyde River, Baffin Island and other communities where I conduct research are an attempt to communicate the importance of our research and the impact of our findings to the public: the people who will be affected by present and future changes.

Some examples of outreach that I've done:

In 2014 and 2015 I was interviewed by Mr. Mark Goldner's Earth Science students from Heath Elementary School in Brookline, MA, who turned the interview into podcasts. These were part of a series of podcasts about climate proxies.

In Providence, RI, from 2009-2013, I volunteered in local elementary schools, teaching science to second-graders.

Public talks I've given about my research:

“Chasing climate change in the Arctic and in Western New York” with Dr. Jason Briner, Buffalo Audubon Society Annual Meeting, North Java, NY, May 2017

“I can see clearly now: Using isotopes to quantify precipitation seasonality” Central New York Association of Professional Geologists, Syracuse, NY, January 2017

"From Northampton to Greenland to China: Oh! The places you'll go with a Smith Geology degree!" Smith College Department of Geological Sciences, December 2012

"Climate change: Old questions, New thoughts" with Sujit Datta and Atreyee Bhattacharya (PhD students at Harvard University), Harvard University Science in the News Seminar Series, Cambridge, MA, May 2012

"Climate change from a geologist's perspective" with Dr. Jessica Whiteside, Rocio Caballero-Gill, Danielle Grogan, and Alexandrina Tzanova (all of Brown University's Dept. of Geological Sciences); Science by the Pint, hosted by Harvard University's Science in the News, Boston, MA, February 2011

"There and Back Again: Journeys to the Arctic", with Dr. Jason Briner, UB Green climate talk series, Buffalo, NY, October 2007

"Hot Times in the Arctic", Centers for Nature Education at Baltimore Woods, Marcellus, NY, August 2007
